African Woman Sets Herself on Fire to Protest Racism

A woman of Congolese descent living in Belgium set herself on fire in the centre of Luxemburg last week to protest against discrimination.

"But the woman changed her plan when she came across a group of journalists gathered to cover an event organised by the ‘Mouvement écologique’ on Place d’Armes, opposite the Cercle municipal. She soaked herself in petrol before confronting the members of the press, announcing that she was about to sacrifice her life to protest against racism. Moments later, she struck a match, turning herself into a human torch in front of hundreds of people."

I'm guessing actions really do speak louder than words! Don't know what to say.

I can try to understand the sentiment, at least she is not harming other. But still, I am sorry, but how is that productive? :'\

Is she alive?
And they let her do it?

The comment that first comes to mind is "ow!"

That is very single minded thinking. As somebody who was extensively burned as a child, the pain is extreme and long lasting. Not for the faint hearted.

I'm surprised it didn't get more coverage.
A buddhist monk from Vietnam did in Washington in 1962 (?), to protest against Ngo Ding Diem's Anti-Buddhist policies. (A lot of the background to the Vietnam conflict was based on religous lines, in facr)

It was a naive and stupid act in my opinion. Racism is a thought or feeling that is experienced by an individual in their mind. No government can legislate against it, the most they can do is educate and hope. Besides my experience of Africa was more racism than I have ever seen in my life, mostly against other Africans too.

Now some nice Belgian doctors and physiotherapists are going to have to dedicate months fixing her up - how pointless.

Those are comments from I guess white people. You don't know the affects of racism. This showing you the affects. She is not like the animals that hurt people. She is doing something that she can control. Not hanging people or shooting people like the white devil!
