"Sudan is not really a country at all, but many.
A composite layers, like a genetic fingerprint of memories that were once fluid, but have since crystallized out from the crucible of possibility"

Random thought
In about 4 years, the Sudan will no longer be Africa's largest country.
Kizzie, why do I read this "thought" like a warning to the world to prevent it happening? Am I being over-reactive or reading too deep between the lines? :-)
black kush I would love if the world prevented to happpen because I dont want to separate. 90% of the refugees here want it, according to my father, he attended a meeting in south sudan where top officials were present. 90% want separation
Crushed by ingsoc, i dont believe so. South Sudanese ruled themselves before and they are good at it. South sudan is a rich a region so they will do well. Darfurians are more dependant on the central govt. South Sudanese can rule themsevles, I'm not sure the darfurians can.
awww kizzie. I'm sorry, but I'm for separation too. :'( Too much for it, despite my own worries.
The south Sudanese that I've talked to all want it. 90% doesn't seem to far off. I remember my dad telling me that I'll always be a refugee or a second class citizen if south Sudan stayed with the north (Ok, my dad is kind of crazy and bitter and he did a good job passing it on to us). Therefore, Sudan as one always made me feel wary of my identity. As messed up as this sounds. I'm very quick to say South Sudanese. I only say Sudanese when I'm being objective, but when I do, I feel like I'm taking on an identity that's not mine. Blaaaaaaaaaaah.
Dahlia, I did notice this in Cairo. Many south sudanese here say they are from south sudaan not just sudan. in the begining it angered me, i know we r gonna split but 4 now we are one country so lets just say sudan:D :$

What is Sudan?
"An uncertain country haphazardly cobbled together first by the Ottomans in the 19th century and later by the British during the 20th. It has no cultural coherence or geopolitical logic, even though its populations have become used to living together". Gerard Prunier
I'm a Sudanese journalist blogging for a better Sudan. When I started this blog in December 2006, I just wanted to write about Sudan and share my perspective. Then, I found out that I had an opinion and I continued blogging. I was also studying journalism at the time and I became a journalist with an interest in human rights, development, politics and gender issues.
